Hongfeng Lake, 28 kilometers west of Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, is the first of the popular spots along the west of Guizhou. With an area of 200 square kilometers, the scenic area combines the natural beauty of lakes and mountains, karst landforms and the customs of minorities. It's renowned as a National Park of China as well as an AAAA National Tourist Attraction. In late autumn, the flaming red leaves of Chinese sweet gum trees fall around the lake adding to the radiance and beauty of the rippling blue waves, giving the lake its name, "Hongfeng Lake (Red Maple Lake)".
Hongfeng Lake Scenic Area has attached great importance to the development of tourism featuring the customs of minorities in Guizhou since its opening. It has exhibited the culture, history, living habits and architectural style of the local Miao, Bouyei and Dong ethnic groups and the villagers welcome visitors, proud of their local customs.
You can come to Hongfeng Lake either by car or by bus. Guiyang-Huangguoshu Waterfalls Expressway runs across the lake. Travel buses are available in Hebin Park of Guiyang and it takes less than half an hour to get to the scenic spot; or you can take the buses headed for Qingzhen from the passenger stations on Yan'an West Road and Shanlin Road, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, every 30 minutes, five yuan($0.76) per person, and when you get there, transfer to the bus bound for Hongfeng Lake.
If you plan to go to Hongfeng Lake, you can choose to live in Guiyang, 33 km away from the scenic spot, where you can find various hotels to meet different needs, including star-rated hotels, school guesthouses and small hostels.
The ticket prices vary according to peak-season and off-season. In peak season, from March 1 to Oct 31, the price is 40 yuan per person; while the price is 30 yuan for the off-season, Nov 1 till the end of next February. An additional five yuan will be charged if you want to climb up to the drum tower of the Dong village.
